Cooper Takes Photos of Baby Brother!

Cross_Cameron_CooperCooper has been hoping that a kitten (or maybe a litter of them) would emerge from Deirdre’s belly.  But last Tuesday, December 1st 2009, she gave birth to a human baby boy!  His name is Cameron David Cross.

It has been a bit of adjustment for Cooper getting used to his brother.  After all, he has been an only child for over four years and used to getting all of our attention!  While our family continues to adapt, Cooper has decided to take some photos of his baby brother.

Cooper Shoots Video!

Cooper with Video Cat CamWell, it’s finally happened – Cooper is now shooting with a Video Cat Cam! We’ve been working on getting it up and running for a couple of weeks and today he went outside with it for the first time. It’s about the same size as his still photo camera, very lightweight, and doesn’t seem to bother him at all when he’s wearing it.

We currently have the Video Cat Cam set to shoot video for 2 minutes then sleep for 2 minutes. It’s really interesting to watch the unedited footage – such a different experience than going through the still photos from his original camera.

In this video you’ll see Cooper spy on some dogs being walked, leap up on top of an 8-foot fence and enter his cat door to eat an afternoon snack.

Many of you who have been following Cooper’s work over the years have noticed that he’s not shot any photos of “wild” animals in the neighborhood. We think the video camera is going to be our best opportunity to see birds and squirrels as Cooper lurks in the bushes.

Next time he goes out to shoot video we plan to change the camera settings to shoot 1 minute and sleep for 3 minutes to give him a greater chance of actually moving – he spends a lot of time in one hiding spot before moving on to the next!

The camera came from our friends at Mr Lee’s Cat Cam who are also the makers of Cooper’s original camera.

Cooper is currently attacking the Christmas tree. You can look forward to video footage of him being squirted with the spray bottle and shown to the door.

Guys and Dolls

IMG_3400For the first year that Cooper was shooting photos we didn’t see a single shot of another animal! We were so worried that he had no friends. Maybe we’d raised such a charming people-loving feline that all other cats wanted nothing to do with him. After his appearance on Animal Planet in December, word must have gotten ’round to the neighborhood cats, because now Cooper has loads of friends! Okay, he only has three that we know of, but they sure look nice.

Recently, Cooper came home with a series of photos of a new slinky black cat. The photo is so cool, that it went straight to Cooper’s Chicago Exhibit! For those of you in the Chicago area it’s a really compelling photo – quite incredible to see at 16″x20″, be sure to stop by and check it out.

"Rendezvous" This is the first photo Cooper took of another cat.

"Meow!" Cooper took this photo right after "Rendezvous." Looks like Cooper and this other cat were interested in a closer look!

"New Haircut" This is one of our all time favorites. The look on her face certainly says she'd rather Cooper not take her photo today!

Cooper Magnet Giveaway Contest

The cat fanatics at LoveMeow.com have schemed upCooper_magnetgiveaway_01sm a fun way for Cooper to connect with his fans. They ran an exclusive contest for their readers to win a Cooper Photographer Cat Magnet.

As promised, Cooper personally selected the winners and it has been announced on his YouTube channel (see below). Congratulations to the ten lucky winners! I’m sure you’ll be hearing from LoveMeow very soon.

Here’s the LoveMeow official results page. The people at LoveMeow designed Cooper’s lucky draw so that he could press any key on the keyboard. This slick little program would randomly select the first five winners and then when he pushes another key he selects the remaining five winners. Cooper was a really good sport for the whole thing. And, yes, he does know how to sit on command.

Cooper_magnetgiveaway_03smCooper prepares to select ten winners in the contest.

For those of you who didn’t win this time – you can still get cool Cooper swag in his Gallery Store. We’ve been seeing folks in Seattle wearing Cooper t-shirts (including his cat sitter!) and drinking from sweet Cooper water bottles. Of course, the ultimate way to show your love for this Photographer Cat is to buy one of his exclusive prints. A portion of photo sales from now until April go to PAWS Chicago.

More Press and Back to Work

Last week Cooper stayed home with his camera to catch some Cooper on Desk Photo 1 cropsunshine while Michael and I headed to Chicago to see the unveiling of his new Cooper: Photographer Cat exhibit at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Cooper’s exhibit will be on display until April 11, 2010 – so if you’re going to be in Chicago between now and then be sure to check it out! And tell them Cooper sent you.

In other fun Cooper news – this week he appeared in the Loyola Phoenix Newspaper in Chicago. Writer, Caitlin Furlong says “An art analyst may feel silly dissecting the pictures taken by a cat, but it’s hard not to find artistic value in this unintentional artist’s photographs.”

We had an exclusive interview with the cat blog, LoveMeow.com where they introduce Cooper as “the amazing cat photographer”. They also attended the opening day of Cooper’s new Chicago Exhibit and posted a great article about it. Blogger, Amy B. says “It was so much more vivid and wonderful seeing them up close. The abstract feel of the photographs, the colors and the lighting seem to be the work out of a highly skilled photographer, but what I am still dumbfounded about is these works of art came from a cat. They put me in a completely different perspective of how it is like to see the world in the eyes of a cat.” LoveMeow will be doing a special Cooper magnet giveaway sometime soon – stay tuned for more details on that!

Wondering what Cooper’s Chicago Exhibit looks like? Here’s a short video of opening weekend at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.

Cooper has also recently passed a big milestone on his Facebook page – now boasting more than 4,000 fans! What a fun way to connect with people from all around the world. If you’re not a fan yet – you should be! There’s a link in the right hand column of this page.

A photo of roses or just the thorns?

Cooper lurks in a neighbor’s rose bushes – perhaps he was worried about the “roses and thorns” reviews of his Chicago exhibit.

Cooper is currently curled up and purring on Michael’s lap as they work on a new video. Cooper is trying to influence us to include more “butt-rock” in the music choices. He’s obviously a very confused feline.

Chicago Buzz Has Started

Cooper ships his exhibitLast week we shipped Cooper’s photo exhibit on to it’s next great location. This morning we flew to Chicago for the opening of his new six month exhibit! It takes place at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago, in conjunction with the National Geographic Crittercam exhibit.

Last night was a special cocktail reception at the Museum to unveil the new exhibits. It was so great to meet our friends from local no-kill shelters PAWS Chicago and Tree House Cat Shelter. If anyone in the Chicago area is thinking about adopting a cat, these are both wonderful organizations.  Cooper is donating a portion of all sales from now until the show closes in April to PAWS Chicago to help spay and neuter other stray cats and find them loving forever homes like his.

The exhibit officially opens this Saturday, September 26th. We are in town for the whole weekend and look forward to meeting Cooper’s fans!

Talk about town has already begun. The buzz about Cooper’s photography is hot! Chicago’s ABC News mentions Cooper in a story yesterday.

Come meet us this weekend at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago!

RSVP on Facebook (and also see updated news spots as we find out about them.)

Happy Birthday Cooper!

Make a wish!Today is Cooper’s 4th Birthday! To celebrate, Cooper not only gets this fun new website revamp, but also a special meal which he very patiently waited for us to get a good photo of. What a good boy!
It’s been a tremendous year for Cooper – starting with Animal Planet shortly after his birthday last September all the way through to our brand new friends we’ve met on Facebook and the blog, we’ve been so impressed with the outpouring of love and support for him. I would say he’s been taking it all in stride. His photography work continues to surprise and amaze us and his disposition couldn’t be sunnier.

We asked him what he wanted for his birthday and he was strangely silent on the subject. So, he ended up getting some “shrimp brittle” from the natural pet food store and a hand made catnip carrot. Though I should mention that he discovered where we were hiding his presents on Monday and ran outside with the carrot before we could catch him.

Dig in little dude, you deserve it!

Eat up little dude, you deserve it!

Cooper in Stealth Mode

IMG_3514_2It’s been nearly two years now that Cooper has been shooting photographs on his trips around the neighborhood. A lot of people ask us about what we’ve seen that surprises us. The biggest surprise is that we haven’t seen any photos of birds or squirrels! We imagine that some day that Cooper may come home with evidence that helps the Seattle Police Department crack a big case they’re working on (maybe capturing a cat burglar)… but that hasn’t happened yet either. But we have seen some interesting peeks into the lives of our neighbors.
